Hostas

Hostas are also often called Plantain Lilies.

They are a symbol of devotion.

The entire plant is edible to humans, but toxic to cats, dogs and horses.

They are part of the asparagaceae family so, not surprisingly, their shoots taste similar to asparagus. Actually, they may contain more minerals than asparagus and other well known vegetables!

Like most greens, they are better when eaten young and taste bitter as they grow. The flowers, however, are better when mature.

Essential oil is made from its leaves.

Hostas are known to have pain relieving, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and anticancer properties.
